Green with Envy
Kangaroo Point, Queensland
Kitchens really are the heart of any home. As an interior designer, it’s one of my favourite rooms, as I know how important it is to the functionality of a family.
With this functionality in mind, my client’s brief for Green with Envy, based in Brisbane, was a total kitchen redesign, with storage and ease of use the focus, and the layout of the kitchen zones an important consideration.
First up, I transformed a very impractical walk-in pantry into a cooking alcove, with a second cleaning alcove placed on the adjacent wall. Wrapping both alcoves in stone allowed me to turn practical elements into two striking design features.
I then tripled the amount of storage space by replacing oversized cupboards with three-stack purpose-built drawers designed to house small appliances. My client’s “clean lines” brief was further met with the addition of integrated appliances and lip handles.
I had a lot of fun with the colour palette in the kitchen, choosing a fresh blue/green core colour, with contrasts of black, and the addition of an oversized white stone bench for the whole family to utilise.
Next, I was off downstairs to redesign the lower level, which now features a rumpus room, laundry, office, bathroom, and mud room. Again, the goal was functionality, with access to the future pool deck factored into the design equation.
A lighter palette inspired by the kitchen was selected for the entire lower level. I loved the freshness and subtleness of the pastel light green utilised.
Storage was the order of the day, with ample added to the mud room off the garage access. A stylish yet practical laundry and spacious bathroom were designed to allow for the addition of an office space off the rumpus room.
The finishing touch was the inclusion of bifold doors which really opened the space, inviting the rear tiled patio, which will soon lead to a pool, into the spacious rumpus room.
